Pentagon: Iranian Disruption of Oil Route 'Will Not Be Tolerated'

Published December 28, 2011

U.S. military officials warned Wednesday that any attempt by Iran to disrupt oil shipments at the mouth of the Persian Gulf "will not be tolerated," as Iran threatened for the second day in a row to interfere with the critical passageway.

Pentagon spokesman George Little describe the route, the Strait of Hormuz, as an "economic lifeline" vital to stability in the region. He said any attempt to block it would be "problematic."

Threatens to block key oil shipments

Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Navy's 5th fleet warned Iran against disrupting shipments in the strait, saying the U.S. Navy keeps a "robust presence in the region" and is "ready to counter malevolent actions to ensure freedom of navigation."

"Anyone who threatens to disrupt freedom of navigation in an international strait is clearly outside the community of nations; any disruption will not be tolerated," Fleet spokeswoman Lt. Rebecca Rebarich said.

The warning comes as Iranian officials stand by earlier threats to use the passageway to retaliate if the West imposes new sanctions targeting Tehran's oil exports over the country's suspect nuclear program.

Iran's navy chief warned Wednesday that his country can close the waterway. "Closing the Strait of Hormuz is very easy for Iranian naval forces," Adm. Habibollah Sayyari told state-run Press TV. "Iran has comprehensive control over the strategic waterway."

On Tuesday, Vice President Mohamed Reza Rahimi also threatened to close the strait, cutting off oil exports, if the West imposes sanctions on Iran's oil shipments.

All of this comes at a tense time, as the Iranian navy carries out a 10-day naval exercise that includes dispatching warships and drones over the vital waterway. The exercises are being carried out on the eastern side of the strait and down into the Gulf of Aden and could put Iranian ships on a collision course with U.S. naval vessels.

The strait is just 34 miles wide, and about 20 percent of the world's oil shipments pass through.

The mere threat of closing the strait has caused oil prices to rise above $100 a barrel.

With concern growing over a possible drop-off in Iranian oil supplies, a senior Saudi oil official said Gulf Arab nations are ready to offset any loss of Iranian crude.

That reassurance led to a drop in world oil prices. In New York, benchmark crude fell 77 cents to $100.57 a barrel in morning trading. Brent crude fell 82 cents to $108.45 a barrel in London.

But a closure of the strait could temporarily cut off some oil supplies and force shippers to take longer, more expensive routes that would drive oil prices higher. It also potentially opens the door for a military confrontation that would further rattle global oil markets.

The threats underline Iranian concern that the West is about to impose new sanctions that could target Tehran's vital oil industry and exports.

Western nations are growing increasingly impatient with Iran over its nuclear program. The U.S. and its allies have accused Iran of using its civilian nuclear program as a cover to develop nuclear weapons. Iran has denied the charges, saying its program is geared toward generating electricity and producing medical radioisotopes to treat cancer patients.

The U.S. Congress has passed a bill banning dealings with the Iran Central Bank, and President Obama has said he will sign it despite his misgivings. Critics warn it could impose hardships on U.S. allies and drive up oil prices.

The bill could impose penalties on foreign firms that do business with Iran's central bank. European and Asian nations import Iranian oil and use its central bank for the transactions.

Iran is the world's fourth-largest oil producer, with an output of about 4 million barrels of oil a day. It relies on oil exports for about 80 percent of its public revenues.

Iran has adopted an aggressive military posture in recent months in response to increasing threats from the U.S. and Israel that they may take military action to stop Iran's nuclear program.

As the Pentagon warns Iran against taking any action in the Strait of Hormuz, a State Department spokesman said Tuesday that "obviously there's an element of bluster" to some of the Iranian comments.

Medvedev: Russia May Target US Missile

MOSCOW (AP) -- Russia's
president threatened on Wednesday to deploy missiles to target the U.S. missile
shield in Europe if Washington fails to assuage Moscow's concerns about its
plans, a harsh warning that reflected deep cracks in U.S.-Russian ties despite
President Barack Obama's efforts to "reset" relations with the

Dmitry Medvedev said he still hopes for a deal with the U.S. on
missile defense, but he strongly accused Washington and its NATO allies of
ignoring Russia's worries. He said that Russia will have to take military
countermeasures if the U.S. continues to build the shield without legal
guarantees that it will not be aimed against Russia.

The U.S. has
repeatedly assured Russia that its proposed missile defense system wouldn't be
directed against Russia's nuclear forces, and it did that again

"I do think it's worth reiterating that the European missile
defense system that we've been working very hard on with our allies and with
Russia over the last few years is not aimed at Russia," said Capt. John Kirby, a
Pentagon spokesman. "It is ... designed to help deter and defeat the ballistic
missile threat to Europe and to our allies from Iran."

White House
spokesman Tommy Vietor said the U.S. will continue to seek Russia's cooperation,
but that the U.S. missile defense plan in Europe "is going well and we see no
basis for threats to withdraw from it."

But Medvedev said Moscow will not
be satisfied by simple declarations and wants a binding agreement. He said,
"When we propose to put in on paper in the form of precise and clear legal
obligations, we hear a strong refusal."

Medvedev warned that Russia will
station missiles in its westernmost Kaliningrad region and other areas, if the
U.S. continues its plans without offering firm and specific pledges that the
shield isn't directed at its nuclear forces. He didn't say whether the missiles
would carry conventional or nuclear warheads.

In Brussels, NATO
Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said he was "very disappointed" with
Russia's threat to deploy missiles near alliance nations, adding that "would be
reminiscent of the past and ... inconsistent with the strategic relations NATO
and Russia have agreed they seek."

"Cooperation, not confrontation, is
the way ahead," Rasmussen said in a statement.

The U.S. missile defense
dispute has long tarnished ties between Moscow and Washington. The Obama
administration has repeatedly said the shield is needed to fend off a potential
threat from Iran, but Russia fears that it could erode the deterrent potential
of its nuclear forces.

"If our partners tackle the issue of taking our
legitimate security interests into account in an honest and responsible way, I'm
sure we will be able to come to an agreement," Medvedev said. "But if they
propose that we `cooperate,' or, to say it honestly, work against our own
interests, we won't be able to reach common ground."

Moscow has agreed to
consider a proposal NATO made last fall to cooperate on the missile shield, but
the talks have been deadlocked over how the system should be operated. Russia
has insisted that it should be run jointly, which NATO has

Medvedev also warned that Moscow may opt out of the New START
arms control deal with the United States and halt other arms control talks, if
the U.S. proceeds with the missile shield without meeting Russia's demand. The
Americans had hoped that the START treaty would stimulate progress in further
ambitious arms control efforts, but such talks have stalled because of tension
over the missile plan.

While the New START doesn't prevent the U.S. from
building new missile defense systems, Russia has said it could withdraw from the
treaty if it feels threatened by such a system in future.

reaffirmed that warning Wednesday, saying that Russia may opt out of the treaty
because of an "inalienable link between strategic offensive and defensive

The New START has been a key achievement of Obama's policy of
improving relations with Moscow, which had suffered badly under the George W.
Bush administration.

"It's impossible to do a reset using old software,
it's necessary to develop a new one," Medvedev's envoy to NATO, Dmitry Rogozin,
said at a news conference.

The U.S. plan calls for placing land- and
sea-based radars and interceptors in European locations, including Romania and
Poland, over the next decade and upgrading them over time.

Medvedev said
that Russia will carefully watch the development of the U.S. shield and take
countermeasures if Washington continues to ignore Russia's concerns. He warned
that Moscow would deploy short-range Iskander missiles in Kaliningrad, a Baltic
Sea region bordering Poland, and place weapons in other areas in Russia's west
and south to target U.S. missile defense sites. Medvedev said Russia would put a
new early warning radar in Kaliningrad.

He said that as part of its
response Russia would also equip its intercontinental nuclear missiles with
systems that would allow them to penetrate prospective missile defenses and
would develop ways to knock down the missile shield's control and information

Igor Korotchenko, a Moscow-based military expert, was quoted
by the state RIA Novosti news agency as saying that the latter would mean
targeting missile defense radars and command structures with missiles and
bombers. "That will make the entire system useless," he said.

and other Russian leaders have made similar threats in the past, and the latest
statement appears to be aimed at the domestic audience ahead of Dec. 4
parliamentary elections.

Medvedev, who is set to step down to allow Prime
Minister Vladimir Putin to reclaim the presidency in March's election, leads the
ruling United Russia party list in the parliamentary vote. A stern warning to
the U.S. and NATO issued by Medvedev seems to be directed at rallying
nationalist votes in the polls.

Rogozin, Russia's NATO envoy, said the
Kremlin won't follow the example of Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev and take
unwritten promises from the West.

"The current political leadership can't
act like Gorbachev, and it wants written obligations secured by ratification
documents," Rogozin said.

Medvedev's statement was intended to encourage
the U.S. and NATO to take Russia seriously at the missile defense talks, Rogozin
said. He added that the Russian negotiators were annoyed by the U.S. "openly
lying" about its missile defense plans.

"We won't allow them to treat us
like fools," he said. "Nuclear deterrent forces aren't a

Qaddafi’s Death and

Ousted Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi was killed Thursday
in a rebel assault on Sirte.
writes in a Cato@Liberty blog
post, “
Death Does Not Legitimize U.S. Intervention in Libya

The death of Muammar Qaddafi is good news in that it
should enable the
United States to
immediately terminate all military operations in
and to turn over responsibility for security in the country to the recognized
leaders of the new government. Qaddafi’s death does not validate the original
decision to launch military operations without authorization from Congress. The
Libyan operation did not advance a
vital national security interest, a point that former secretary of defense
Robert Gates stressed at the time.
Qaddafi could have been brought down by the Libyan people, but the Obama
administration’s decision to overthrow him may now implicate the
United States
in the behavior of the post-Qaddafi regime. That is
unfair to the American people, and to the Libyan people who can and must be held
responsible for fashioning a new political order….I
worry, too, that just as the capture of Saddam Hussein in December 2003 didn’t
end the Iraq War that pro-Qaddafi forces will continue to resist the new
government there

Vets Call For Resignations, Impeachments in Washington!

Call to Action-OORAH!

Posted on Bob Unruh-On October 4, 2011:

“Back quite a few years ago when the American people were suffering under a despot called King George III they drew up a list of his offenses and told him they were not going to allow his government by fiat to be “destructive” any longer.

In the Declaration of Independence, they cited such problems as his refusal to allow beneficial and necessary laws, his obstruction of justice by manipulating the judiciary, his erection of “a multitude of new offices,” his disruption of trade and his preventing the laws adopted by local legislatures from addressing problems.

The Revolutionary War resulted.

Now, the Veteran Defenders of America, a group that involves such luminaries as Maj. Gen. Paul E. Vallely, is pointing out a similar list of offenses.

Only this document, “A Declaration to Restore the Constitutional Republic,” is addressed to the people.

It in, officials with Veteran Defenders note that the America people now have a strategic leader, President Obama, who “has questionable allegiance” and has “wreaked economic tyranny on the American people.” He also destroyed accepted administrative processes with 32 czars, doubled the national debt in one year, sided with Mexico against the American people, is demanding new taxes, subverted the nation’s immigration laws, forcibly took control of private economic interests, is targeting charities and churches for penalties and has advocated for a mosque “bankrolled by terrorist sympathizers” while refusing to defend the nation’s own laws.

This time, however, they just want his resignation, and those of his friends.

“This is not a call to overthrow our entire institutions of government, or subvert the Law of the Land, but rather to restore those institutions to their honorable constitutionally forms,” says the new declaration.

“As such, and under their oaths to the Constitution and the people whom they are sworn to protect and defend against all enemies, foreign and domestic, it is incumbent upon every citizen, veteran, soldier, officer and agent to use the tools of the people to protect the people and return our government to a Constitutional Republic of, by and for the people.”

It continues, “May the Creator, who endowed each of us with certain unalienable rights, among them the right to Life, Liberty and the individual Pursuit of Happiness free from government tyranny, bless this mission of, by and for the people of the United States, and may the Lord let freedom ring in America, once again.

“We demand an end to government corruption, an end to despotic leadership in D.C., an end to the current assault on all decent and honest American taxpayers, businesses and honorable public servants of the people. We demand the peaceful return of the people’s government, and we will remain resolute in the defense of the Constitution and the United States of America until the people can once again, feel secure in their nation and government.”

Veterans Defenders was launched by Richard Van Waes, who said America’s freedoms “are in jeopardy.” It is part of the Patriots Union.

The Veteran Defenders organization doesn’t disclose the number of its members, but a spokesman confirmed that members of the group overwhelmingly are in strong support of the statement, and other veterans organizations are expressing interest.

He said it is time that veterans remember they all can contribute in some way to preserving and restoring the nation. His group is intended to give “veterans the opportunity to continue fulfilling their oath to defend America.”

To that end, they must know about threats, including that from radical Islam, must move proactively against those threats and interact with local law enforcement to respond.

Among its advisers is Vallely, who retired in 1991 from the Army as Deputy Commander General, Pacific, following a career launched in 1961 with his graduation from West Point. He served in Vietnam, Europe, the Pacific Rim and others.

“An undisclosed number of American veterans and former service members have come together to prepare and present this Call-to-Action on behalf of the U.S. Constitution, the Republic, the Rule of Law and equal justice for all freedom loving citizens of the U.S.A.,” the document explains

Specifically, the summons for peaceful disobedience should include:

  • We CALL upon every member of federal, state and local government, legislative, judicial, law enforcement and military, who have taken an oath to protect and defend the Constitutional Republic from all enemies, foreign and domestic, to act upon those oaths for the stated purpose of restoring the Constitutional Republic.

  • We CALL upon ALL veterans and veteran organizations in America, who still believe in their oath to protect and defend, to unite with us at once - in this Declaration to Restore the Constitutional Republic.

  • We CALL for ALL citizens who still desire freedom and liberty, to stand with us in peaceful protest, and carry our demands to right the wrongs against our nation in the preservation of freedom, liberty, justice and the rule of law.

Vallely has described the confrontation as “a battle that will decide our fate as a nation.”

“During the past three years, the current administration has committed the most egregious offenses against the people, the states and the Constitution, since the founding of our country and today, they operate as a virtual dictatorship, against the governed, beyond the scope and authority the people granted them in the Constitution and at odds with the will of the vast majority of American citizens,” the call states. “The actions of the Obama administration in total, rise to the level of treason against the United States and its people.”

It alleges violations of U.S. Constitution and each and every part of the Bill of Rights.

“At this late date, the individually itemized list of abuses and usurpations would require an encyclopedia of unconstitutional offenses to the Republic and there is no evidence to suggest that there remains even one legitimate honest courtroom in the country to which all evidence could be presented,” the veterans said.

However, it is the players, not the rules, that are in violation, the group said.

“The constitutional representative republic must be restored, no matter the means or the cost. It is on this foundation that we morally and rightfully call for all good people to rise up, stand together, move to restore the constitutional republic, and hold those who have and would stand against the people, fully accountable.”

The new declaration explains its goals are “the immediate and unconditional orderly resignation of Barack Hussein Obama II” and well as “Joseph R. Biden.”

“In addition to the known fact that the Obama/Biden ticket was advanced by way of fraudulent representations concerning the constitutional eligibility of Barack Hussein Obama II, under Article II requirements for the office of president, the Obama/Biden has committed countless crimes against the U.S. Constitution, our Republican form of government and the American people while in control of the executive branch.

“They are not able to do this alone, but with the help and cover of many anti-American players, who have also acted at odds with their oaths to protect and defend the Constitution, our Republic and the people of the United States. As a result, these players must be removed from office and held accountable for their actions as well.”

Those listed include the president’s staff and czars, cabinet, and appointees, such as Supreme Court justices Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor.

And if they don’t go quietly?

“That in the event that these individuals refuse to immediately resign in an orderly fashion designed to serve the best interests of the United States, we demand that the 66 members of the people’s House who voted against the recent raising of the nation’s debt ceiling, to immediately begin impeachment proceedings against every member of the Obama administration.”

All of Obama’s plans and strategies should be suspended, and temps, literally “new temporary executive branch members,” should be appointed to act until elections can be held, the plan demands.

Further, the states should act on their own, cutting themselves off from Washington.

“Nothing less than complete compliance with each of these demands is acceptable to the people of the United States. These demands have been published for public support and delivered to all members of Congress.”

Services members, and “every patriotic citizen,” are being asked to pressure law enforcement, judicial, intelligence and military agencies whose members have sworn to protect and defend the Constitution to do just that.

Then on the coming Veterans Day, Nov. 11, a “unified march” should be held in Washington.

But be warned, the Veteran Defenders said, “In the event that the current administration or its thug supporters attempt to use government or civilian force and violence to silence the people, as in the cases of Syria, Libya, Yemen, China’s Tiananmen Square, the Bonus Army of 1932 in the United States, or the UK presently wrestling with black and Muslim violence, the people must be prepared to defend themselves against such tyrannical tactics. We cannot expect that the federal government will act in the best interest of American veterans or citizens.”

Among the dozens of specific violations that Veteran Defenders identified:

  • Obama is a national security threat since he definitely has questionable allegiance to the United States, not to mention his refusal to complete and release full, frank and truthful answers as to who he is. Obama has demonstrated a blatant disregard for the public safety and security.

  • Obama and his handlers released an obvious forged birth certificate after release at least two fraudulent COLBs (Certifications of Live Birth). Obama is also using numerous stolen Social Security numbers.

  • Obama and his incompetent advisors have wreaked economic tyranny on the American people, all the while calling for the rest of us to endure economic sacrifice.

  • Obama has destroyed accepted administrative process by creating 32 czars who only report to him, bypassing the Congress.

  • In one year, Obama and his minions doubled our national debt, which took 200 years to accumulate.

  • Obama and his Justice Department sided with a foreign government (Mexico) when they sued the state of Arizona in order to force the continuation of illegal immigration.

  • Obama passed “Dream Act” by executive order which aids illegal aliens through “prosecutorial discretion” all to garner votes for his election.

  • Obama and the cabal’s National Security Strategy released in May, allows for the targeted assassination of U.S. citizens including “homegrown terrorists” without due process.

  • Obama dhimmitude given Ramadan and Iftar dinners in the White House, while he cancels the National Day of Prayer without one word of objection from the Congress.

  • Obama has disgraced the United States by bowing to foreign potentates, while at the same time snubbed our longtime allies, Great Britain and Israel. Obama and his friends have deliberately fostered hate against the Jews and Israel by promoting a Palestinian state.
  • The State Department used $23 million in taxpayer money to transform Kenya into a constitutionally communist country where freedom of speech is limited and property rights are based on social justice.
  • Obama attempts to run this country with executive orders.
  • Historic and unprecedented move by Obama’s cabal to indoctrinate our children in socialist, humanist garbage, sent a video to all schools, and naturally this scheme was promoted by the NEA, with the children taking a pledge, “…to be a servant to our president and to all mankind,” and then they chant over and over “together we can.”

In a recent commentary on WND, Vallely wasted no words, “President Obama, his appointees and czars must be replaced immediately.”

“This is the current battle that we constitutionalists, face and we must be aggressive in our efforts. We must adhere to our Constitution. Obama will continue to bypass Congress and the people in his progressive agenda because that is who he is and that is what he believes he has the power to do. Congress, you must stand tall for the American people and enjoin the Supreme Court to halt executive-branch violations of the law and our Constitution.

“Incompetence, treason, corruption and dishonesty of officials now come into play as these relate to our national security and economy, and are the rationale for demanding resignations and a change of government,” he said.

Likewise, former Congressman Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., wrote in a WND ... “The number of the president’s actions that arguably qualify as impeachable offenses is staggering. The question before the country is what to do about it.

“It is time for the House of Representatives to take its constitutional responsibility seriously and launch an impeachment investigation. The investigative committee should hold hearings, collect and weigh the evidence, and then present its findings to the Congress and the nation. “

He cited as individual violations on which Obama, if found guilty, should be removed.

The first statement from a member of Congress on the issue of impea...came from U.S. Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., who responded to this question from Think Progress: “I know Newt Gingrich has came out (sic) and said if they don’t reverse course [regarding trials for terror suspects] here, we ought to be talking about possibly impeaching either Attorney General [Eric] Holder or even President Obama to try to get them to reverse course. Do you think that is something you would support?”

Franks replied: “If it could gain the collective support, absolutely. I called for Eric Holder to repudiate the policy to try terrorists within our civil courts, or resign. So it just seems like that they have an uncanny ability to get it wrong on almost all fronts.”

WND also has reported that Jonathan Chait at The New Republic, before the 2010 election, predicted that the House would impeach Obama with a majority in the House, but he wouldn’t be removed from office because that would demand 67 votes in the Senate.

“Hear me now and believe me later. ... They won’t do it right away. And they won’t succeed in removing Obama. (You need 67 Senate votes.) But if Obama wins a second term, the House will vote to impeach him before he leaves office,” Chait wrote.

In his explanation of why he believed an impeachment could be forthcoming, Chait says the reason itself won’t matter.

“Wait, you say. What will they impeach him over? You can always find something. Mini-scandals break out regularly in Washington. Last spring, the political press erupted in a frenzy over the news that the White House had floated a potential job to prospective Senate candidate Joe Sestak. On a scale of one to 100, with one representing presidential jaywalking and 100 representing Watergate, the Sestak job offer probably rated about a 1.5. Yet it was enough that GOP Representative Darrell Issa called the incident an impeachable offense,” Chait wrote.

WND also reported when Maj. Gen. Jerry Curry, who served in Vietnam and commanded the U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command at Aberdeen Proving Ground during his long military career, said Congress should simply hand Obama an ultimatum.

“Action should be taken by the Senate and should be taken by the House,” he said. “They should serve notice on him and say, ‘Mr. President, we love you but we want to tell you something. You’re under a cloud of suspicion. We can’t continue running this country with you in charge under this cloud. Now either you clear it up or you resign from office.’”

He was answering questions on Stan Solomon’s “Talk to Solomon” show:

Peter Ferrara, on the American Spectator website, also has predicted Obama’s resignation.

“I am now ready to predict that President Obama will not even make it [to 2012],” he wrote. “I predict that he will resign in discredited disgrace before the fall of 2012,” Ferrera said.

Times columnist Jeffrey T. Kuhner, who also is president of the Edmund Burke Institute, wrote, “President Obama has engaged in numerous high crimes and misdemeanors. The Democratic majority in Congress is in peril as Americans reject his agenda. Yet more must be done: Mr. Obama should be impeached.”

Kuhner continued, “He is slowly – piece by painful piece – erecting a socialist dictatorship. We are not there – yet. But he is putting America on that dangerous path. He is undermining our constitutional system of checks and balances; subverting democratic procedures and the rule of law; presiding over a corrupt, gangster regime; and assaulting the very pillars of traditional capitalism. Like Venezuela’s leftist strongman, Hugo Chavez, Mr. Obama is bent on imposing a revolution from above – one that is polarizing America along racial, political and ideological lines. Mr. Obama is the most divisive president since Richard Nixon. His policies are balkanizing the country. It’s time for him to go.”

Floyd and Mary Beth Brown, in a WND column, discussed the they launched.

And at the Taking America Back 2010 conference in Miami in September, Floyd Brown expanded on the idea.

Brown, president of the Western Center for Journalism, said, “The Obama presidency is a disease. … Article 2, Section 4 (the impeachment clause of the Constitution) is the cure. And it’s Obama’s hatred of America that makes it absolutely imperative that we take action now.

“Barack Hussein Obama is not some do-gooder that has had his plans go astray,” Brown added. “He is not a person of good will just trying his best to make America go the right direction. He is not. Barack Hussein Obama is a liar that absolutely knows what he’s doing to the United States of America. He has a plan. He has an agenda. This man knows exactly where he’s taking us.

“Barack Obama is a very dangerous man,” said Brown. “Over the last two years, we have been watching the slow progression of what I call a bloodless coup.

Note: I’ve also joined the cause as a means of standing up for and defending those rights given us under our “Constitution” and/or “Bill of Rights” and thought you might be interested in doing the same-You Decide.

Armored Mercedes cars enter Algeria from Libya: Egypt agency

8:49 PM CDT, August 26, 2011

CAIRO (Reuters) - A convoy of six Mercedes cars have crossed from Libya into Algeria, Egypt's state MENA news agency reported on Saturday, quoting a rebel source.

It was impossible to verify the report and it was not immediately clear who might have been in any convoy, but MENA quoted the source as speculating that senior Libyan officials or Muammar Gaddafi himself and his sons may have fled the country.

"It is believed that these vehicles were carrying senior Libyan officials, and possibly Gaddafi and his sons," MENA quoted the source as saying.

Algerian officials were not immediately reachable for comment.

The agency quoted the source from the rebel Military Council in the city of Ghadamis, on the Algerian border, as saying that the convoy of armored cars crossed the frontier on Friday morning protected by the commander of a desert nomadic military unit that had apparently operated under Gaddafi.

The source was quoted as saying the rebels were unable to chase and stop the convoy.

Libyan rebels said on Friday they were close to capturing Gaddafi, who has disappeared after his Bab al-Aziziya bastion fell to the rebels on Tuesday.

Algeria's Foreign Ministry denied on Friday that it was linking any recognition of Libya's rebel National Transitional Council (NTC) to a commitment from the council to crack down on Islamist militants.

A government source in Algeria had told Reuters on Thursday that it would not yet grant recognition to the NTC, and that it wanted to be certain that Libya's rulers were engaged in fighting al Qaeda's north African wing.

discovered that Islamic extremists have created a "Taliban-type culture" in
Britain’s universities that is dedicated to installing Shariah law and
intimidating faculty, staff and students. This week a top secret report
detailing the attempt to radicalize the campuses has been sent to
vice-chancellors across the nation by Jonathan Evans, the head of the security
service. The document contains a stark warning from the MI5 chief that in the
past year there has "been sewn on campuses in England and Wales the seeds of
Shariah law which has intimidated students and staff."

Ten Commandments of Human Relations

The fundamental issue in human ethical behavior is summarized by Jesus in what we have come to call "The Golden Rule." Jesus put it this way:

So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets (Matthew 7:12 TNIV).

It asks us to test our treatment of others by putting ourselves in their place. Treat others the way you would want them to treat you in the same or similar circumstance.

Somebody took that principle and translated it into Ten Commandments of Human Relations. You may have seen this anonymous piece, for it circulates in a variety of settings. In case you have missed it, I am reproducing it here.

Speak to people. There is nothing as nice as a cheerful word of greeting.

Smile at people. It takes 72 muscles to frown, only 14 to smile.

Call people by name. It is music to anyone’s ears to hear the sound of his or her name.

Be friendly and helpful.

Be cordial. Speak and act as if everything you do is genuinely a pleasure. If it isn’t, learn to make it so.

Be genuinely interested in people. You can like almost anyone, if you try.

Be generous with praise, cautious with criticism.

Be considerate of the feelings of others. There are usually three sides to a controversy — yours, the other fellow’s, and the correct one.

Be alert to serve. What counts most in life is what you do for others.

Live with a good sense of humor, a generous dose of patience, and a dash of humility appropriate to being human.

Made in God’s image, all of us have something to be valued!

The great challenge in human experience is not work skills, but people skills. That is, research has shown that the majority of people who fail in their vocation do so because they cannot get along with people.

You might think through the meaning of these ten common-sense ideas for your own workplace and personal activity. But what about the larger setting for your daily life? These principles work everywhere you go, for they are about showing respect to the people you meet in all those places.

Made in God’s image, all of us have something to be valued, affirmed, and acknowledged by others. But let it begin with us to acknowledge it in them. As the cycle of giving and receiving enlarges, the human community comes alive.
