TOTUS was taken — at least for a little bit.
That’s right, a truck carrying the president’s
teleprompter (jokingly referred to as TOTUS, or the teleprompter of the United
States), podiums, and audio equipment was stolen in Virginia, WWBT-TV reports.
The Department of Defense confirmed the heist, but it’s unclear if the
thieves targeted the vehicle for what it contained or simply got “lucky.”
WWBT has more:
We‘re told the truck was parked at the Virginia Center Commons Courtyard
Marriott in advance on Wednesday’s presidential visit to Chesterfield.
Sources said inside that vehicle was about $200,000 worth of sound equipment,
several podiums and presidential seals, behind which only the President himself
can stand.
They told NBC12 around 12:30 Monday afternoon that truck was recovered in the
parking lot of the Holiday Inn Express near the airport and hotel staff confirm
police activity. One guest we spoke with said he saw various law enforcement
agencies examining a white box truck parked there.
Still, even though the truck was recovered it’s unclear from reports if any
of the equipment was removed from the vehicle or if it was just missing
temporarily.
“No classified or sensitive information was in the
vehicle,” a Defense Information Systems Agency spokesperson told WWBT. “We take
incidents such as this very seriously and a formal investigation is
continuing.”
Comment by Michael Colwell on October 6, 2011 at 8:42am President Obama today will push Congress to act on his jobs plan and credit
Senate Democrats for taking action on jobs, according to a senior administration
official.
The president is also likely to endorse a "millionaire's surtax" -- a rate
increase on those earning $1 million or more.
Comment by Michael Colwell on September 12, 2011 at 8:56pm After Monday’s announcement that founder Michael Arrington is leaving AOL’s TechCrunch, Huffington Post Media Group president Arianna Huffington took aim at the Wall Street Journal’s reporting on the subject.
The Journal wrote on Saturday an article delving into what writers Jessica E. Vascellaro and Emily Steel characterized as a “war of words” between Huffington and Arrington. Last week a high-profile editorial kerfuffle resulted after Arrington disclosed that AOL had given him the go-ahead to run a venture-capital fund while he was also still TechCrunch editor. On Monday the situation was resolved, with Arrington deciding to stick with the fund and move away from the blog.
The Journal piece cited “a dozen current and former employees” as sources in describing the situation at AOL, some of whom provided quotes indicating doubt with the editorial direction at AOL, which bought the Huffington Post earlier this year for $315 million.
“Exceptionally misinformed, substance-lite, and anonymous-quote-riddled” is how Huffington described the Wall Street Journal article, which she maintained put the wrong focus on the struggle at AOL: “The issue at hand wasn't about personalities. It was about principle; a very simple fundamental principle about conflicts of interest.”
Huffington too couldn’t resist at dig at the Wall Street Journal’s parent company News Corp., the owner of the now-defunct News of the World tabloid at the center of a massive British phone hacking scandal this summer. She said the Wall Street Journal’s “reporters got the story so wrong, at least we know they aren't hacking into our phones.”
The Wall Street Journal declined to comment on Huffington’s piece.
Everyone is wondering if Eric Holder ordered (or at least knew of) Operation "Fast and Furious." This old C-Span video proves that it goes all the way to the White House.
