My Military History

I come from a military family, my father served in both the Army, Army Air Corps, and the Untied States Air Force, retiring as a Ltc, and buried at Arlington Cemetery, along with my mom, and one of my brothers. My dad ensured America would have soldiers from his family for many years, producing four sons, all serving and retiring from the military, and counting my son, who served 16 years before Clinton drove him out, is now a self Contract Intelligence type (no more info will be provided). He did serve in Somalia and was a part of "Black Hawk Down" loosing his team (enough said). He has served both in the military (United States Army Intelligence and Security Command) in Saudi, then as a contractor (still in the intelligence community) in Saudi, Iraq, Kuwait, and places I can not mention now. Well, between my father, four sons, counting me, and his grandson, he provided his beloved country 137 active duty years. At one point all served on active duty while all of us still alive. My father enlisted one of my brothers, one of my brothers enlisted another brother, and my dad and one of my brothers reenlisted another of us. One brother served under me in Ethiopia, another worked with me in Germany, and I enlisted my son into the service, same field as most of his uncles. Dad was Air Force, one brother Navy, and three of us brothers and my son all served in the United States Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM). One was an 05H, two of us were 05K's and my son was an 98C. These will only mean something to those in or were in (INSCOM) my son and one brother, now also a contractor, in the intelligence community. Being a competitive bunch driven by our dad, I happen to be the most decorated, with the only purple heart in the family, although my dad should have received one while in Iwo Jima. I still have the rifle and bayonet that was involved with his wounds, with my father's blood on both. My highest wartime (Viet Nam) decorations included the Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars with V devices, from our government, and from the government of Viet Nam, the Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star ( equivalent to our Silver Star). The number of Air medals are three, I think, can't recall, but I did receive three Meritorious Service Medals, three Army Commendation Medals, and other medals I would have to go and look them up. I write this, because these medals are a reflection of 20 plus years of military service, and as a 100% disabled Vet, my decorations mean something to me, unlike at least one Senator, I'll not mention his name, who claims to have tossed his Silver Star over the fence of the grounds of the White House. A shameful act, one that demonstrates the contempt he held for the military and those who served then and now. Well, enough said about my military past, I am now an old retired MSG, 98Z, who still loves his country, as much as his time in service, wearing the uniform of the United States Army. God bless our current soldiers, young men and women serving with pride all over the world, with a Commander in Chief, who has a questionable past and one that is disappointing as they, our troops, deserve more. This is my country too!

This is my country too.

I was lucky; I had a good father and mother who believed in “God and Country”. Unlike so many in this world, life for me was one of growing up loving not just my family, but the great country that allowed me to be free and able to choose what life I…

I lost, then found myself again

Growing up my first 30 or 40 years was not difficult to get lost, and I mean really lost into myself. Born in San Bernardino, California was the start of my very long journey, one that would find me in a whirlwind of losing myself as my life would…

Ten Commandments of Human Relations

The fundamental issue in human ethical behavior is summarized by Jesus in what we have come to call "The Golden Rule." Jesus put it this way:

So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets (Matthew 7:12 TNIV).

It asks us to test our treatment of others by putting ourselves in their place. Treat others the way you would want them to treat you in the same or similar circumstance.

Somebody took that principle and translated it into Ten Commandments of Human Relations. You may have seen this anonymous piece, for it circulates in a variety of settings. In case you have missed it, I am reproducing it here.

Speak to people. There is nothing as nice as a cheerful word of greeting.

Smile at people. It takes 72 muscles to frown, only 14 to smile.

Call people by name. It is music to anyone’s ears to hear the sound of his or her name.

Be friendly and helpful.

Be cordial. Speak and act as if everything you do is genuinely a pleasure. If it isn’t, learn to make it so.

Be genuinely interested in people. You can like almost anyone, if you try.

Be generous with praise, cautious with criticism.

Be considerate of the feelings of others. There are usually three sides to a controversy — yours, the other fellow’s, and the correct one.

Be alert to serve. What counts most in life is what you do for others.

Live with a good sense of humor, a generous dose of patience, and a dash of humility appropriate to being human.

Made in God’s image, all of us have something to be valued!

The great challenge in human experience is not work skills, but people skills. That is, research has shown that the majority of people who fail in their vocation do so because they cannot get along with people.

You might think through the meaning of these ten common-sense ideas for your own workplace and personal activity. But what about the larger setting for your daily life? These principles work everywhere you go, for they are about showing respect to the people you meet in all those places.

Made in God’s image, all of us have something to be valued, affirmed, and acknowledged by others. But let it begin with us to acknowledge it in them. As the cycle of giving and receiving enlarges, the human community comes alive.
